Johannes Enschedé, 1708-1780

Engraving of Johannes Enschedé by Cornelis van Noorde

An engraving of Johannes Enschedé (1708-1780), owner of the Enschedé printing house in Haarlem with his father Izaak Enschedé. Johannes Enschedé ordered a large number of types to be made by Joan Michaël Fleischman and Jacques-François Rosart and in 1768 produced Proef van letteren welke gegooten worden in de nieuwe Haerlemsche lettergietery, an early type specimen book and an important document of the history of Dutch printing. His printing house became one of the most successful in the Netherlands, and continues in operation as the security printing firm Joh. Enschedé today.
