Today’s Random Illustrations of the Day come from a collection of the stories of Gothic and fantasy writer Charles Nodier (see our profile for public domain translations of his works.)
Original text via Archive.org: Contes de Charles Nodier. Etchings by Tony Johannot. (Paris: Publie par J. Hetzel, 1846)
These etchings were made by Tony Johannot, who Theophile Gautier called “the king of etchers.” Johannot was a very prolific illustrator; a partial list of authors and books he engraved for can be found at his Wikipedia page.
