Friedrich Schiller is, along with Goethe, the brothers Schlegel, Wieland, Herder, and Kleist, considered one of the principal writers of the Sturm und Drang and Weimar Classicism period, and has influenced numerous writers of German literature. Classic works include Mary Stuart, William Tell, The Robbers, and Wallenstein.
The 1883 edition of Schiller’s Works by George Barrie Co., edited by J.G. Fischer has got to be the ultimate edition of Schiller in English. It has wonderful engravings illustrating virtually every page, and the translations are by Hjalmar H. Boyesen (1848 – 1945), Norwegian-American novelist and scholar of Scandinavian literature. The poetry translations are on point and offer an English Schiller worthy of comparison with the original (though I am unable to find if Boyesen did all of the translating, or whether this was a group effort; such a colossal project as this must have involved many hands.)
For a taster, here are some pictures of my (humongous!) four volume physical copy.
