While I was searching for the Jubilee Edition illustrated by Hans Tegner of the comedies of early modern Danish playwright Ludwig Holberg (which was touted as excellent in a couple of books on illustration I’ve been reading), I came across two other editions of Holberg’s Comedies which had unique ornamental features that I thought worth clipping and sharing.
First up is this 1898 edition “issued by Torvald Storm” (about whom I can learn nothing), and published by Martius Truelsen, who I have seen touted in one other place as a notable Danish typographer. (I don’t know if that’s true; but his press does seem to have published a few other nicely illustrated books.) The title page has this gauche Gothic lettering that immediately stands out, but what really caught my eye are the lovely Art Deco-style stamps used at the end of each chapter. Splendid stuff, and I wish I could find more like them.
The second set of ornaments come from a seemingly much more widely printed edition issued by Julius Martensen, which has some nifty borders and some frilly medallions, but overall is not quite as unique as the designs in the Storm and Truelsen edition.
